Coolin’ W/ Jake & Papa

A lot of people may remember you two as the youngest brothers from the BET show ‘From Brothers to Brutha’ and you have guys been on a serious grind! How did ‘Jake&Papa’ come together?

We’ve been together since Jake was born LOL… Started performing together at 4 and 5, recording music at 10 & 11 before the group. So when the group ended, it’s what made the most sense. So it came back together organically.

For the new listeners, how you would describe your overall style as a group?

R&B/Soul music. Dark, poetic, at times sexual, and lyrics sang with passion. We love all types of music, so while we may sing R&B, we grew up listening to all genres so we tend to mix sounds from other genres.

Somethin Soulful, WESTERNPLAYALISTICAMAROMUZIC and the recently released debut EP, Athena’s Erotica all have their own feel. How did guys come up with the title theme and overall feel of each project?

Just how we were feeling at the time. They all have kind of different feels but all represent us very well. Somethin Soulful was just raw & passionate, WPCM was more lighthearted, some player shit for the summertime. Athena’s Erotica we narrowed it down more to what we feel represents us best, sound wise.

My absolute favorite Jake&Papa song is ‘Somethin Soulful’. What are each of your favorite project/song thus far?

Athena’s Erotica is definitely our favorite project to date! We just worked so hard on it and we feel like we created the JP sound, officially, with this one.

R&B and Hip Hop in a lot of ways has become one. When I heard Athena’s Erotica, it gave me a feel I haven’t had in a very long time, something our culture is missing right now. Is it Jake&Papa’s intent to bring that feel good music back?

I mean, yea for sure. That’s definitely what we’re here for. That feeling that we all know and love has been missing but no one has done anything about it! Maybe because they can’t, or are content with the way things are going, I don’t know.. But Jake&Papa wanna bring that feeling back, starting with Athena’s Erotica.

What can old and new Jake&Papa fans expect for 2014? Videos?Tours?
